Featured Instructor: Bryce Sadtler, assistant professor of chemistry in Arts & Sciences at Washington University in St. Louis
Crystalline solids play a critical role in our everyday lives from computer electronics, to building construction, to jewelry. This workshop will introduce teachers to Crystal Viewer, a software program that can be used to visualize the 3D structure of crystals. Dr. Sadtler will show teachers how to download the freely available software, load crystal structure files, and view different crystals. Sadtler will incorporate Next Generation Science Standards in connecting the structure of crystals with their properties. Examples will include why the different forms of carbon, such as diamond and graphite, exhibit very different observable properties and which crystals make good solar cells. Workshop is limited to 15 participants.
Lunch and parking included. This workshop is free and open to high school science teachers. Registration required.
