High school students compete in St. Louis Area Brain Bee

More than 150 people watched as 54 local students competed in the St. Louis Area Brain Bee Feb. 8 in McDonnell Hall on the WUSTL Danforth Campus. This competition for high school students tests knowledge in neuroscience and engages the competitors in cool brain science activities.

The annual St. Louis Area Brain Bee is a great opportunity for students to read cutting-edge science materials and win prizes, research internships, and trips to other Brain Bee competitions. This year’s competitors studied Brain Facts, a book produced by the Society for Neuroscience, and took part in free training sessions on Saturdays in January at the Taylor Community Science and Resource Center. The St. Louis Area Brain Bee champion was awarded an all-expenses paid trip to compete in the National Brain Bee. The winner of the National Brain Bee receives a $1,500 cash reward, a fellowship to work in a neuroscience laboratory, and a trip to the International Brain Bee.

The St. Louis Area Brain Bee 2014 sponsors include the Young Scientist Program, the McDonnell Center for Systems Neuroscience, the Cognitive, Computational, and Systems Neuroscience Pathway, the Institute for School Partnership, and the Society for Neuroscience. ISP Faculty Fellow Erik Herzog, PhD, professor of biology, (above) is the faculty sponsor for WUSTL neuroscience outreach efforts and serves as the chapter representative to the St. Louis Chapter of the Society for Neuroscience.
